| Growing up in Pennsylvania and also living in New Jersey
for a few years, I don't think I appreciated this species of tree. The
more I photograph flowering dogwood, the more I value it. What a
wonderful way to welcome spring. As I often travel south in the spring,
I am delighted when I see the dogwood trees scattered on the hillsides,
especially when the Chinese redbud trees accompany them. The flowers are
actually compactly clustered in the center of four showy, greenish,
white or pinkish bracts (specialized leaf like parts). The bracts are
ordinarily considered to be the flowers. They remind me of porcelain. |
