| As I walked through the woods, I was immersed in the
pervasiveness of the autumn brilliance of an overcast Vermont fall day.
The visual richness of the changing colors incited a sense of drama and
created a feeling of lightheartedness. Letting my mind mingle with this
magical moment I experienced a soaring awareness of the true nature of
this spectacle. However, there is an ironic twist to the provocation of
these feelings and occurrences. What is witnessed in this beautiful
display is the seasonal "death" of a living thing. I was
experiencing a sense of well-being at the expense of another vital
entity. In the words of Charles Kuralt, "It is death that causes
this blinding show of color, but it is a fierce and flaming death." |
